Community Hub

At our Community Hub, @Shenley_Lane, we have, and are currently run a variety of projects and programmes aimed at enabling and empowering our local community and raising their aspirations. We offer activities for seniors, information for the community (e.g. financial literacy advice drop-in sessions), recreation (from Under 7s to Adult Level), youth provision (mentoring, youth clubs, skills and aspirations workshops). An example of our work is the offering of employability and aspiration workshops and practical sessions led by local expert coaches for NEETS and unemployed community members. The purpose of our charity is to raise the quality of life for all members of our community, in particular those who are struggling to do it for themselves.

We have been a hub of socio-economic community development for over 75 years and over the past 18 months we have continued this trend through a variety of methods:

  1. We have hosted regular social and skills development events for the elderly which have been led by young people so are inter-generational and increase community cohesion e.g. Christmas Party with serving and entertainment provided by the young people.
  2. We have established football teams from Under 7s up to Adults so that all members of the community can keep active and meet new people (over 320 local people), this is a development we have supported by offering advice and information on healthy eating and positive lifestyles so that the entire community can increase their quality of life, well-being and teamwork skills.
  3. We have held employability and skills sessions (e.g. Hygiene certificates, skills qualifications, first aid qualification) delivered by local business NEW Training, which have seen over 300 unemployed and low-qualified people directly improve their life chances, broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations.
  4. In partnership with Shenley Academy, we have coached young people to establish their own enterprises which offer refreshments at events we hold. In this way the local community has gained a service and the young people grow in confidence and experience. To this end, 8 young people from Shenley Academy are due to open a Saturday Kitchen called the YES! Café. This is due to launch Saturday 14th September 2013.
  5. We organise and host an array of community events e.g. Street Parties (Jubilee, Royal Wedding), Halloween Family Fun Night, youth football festivals, charity festivals (Cancer Research fundraisers).

Overall our impact has been to directly improve the life chances and futures of some of the most disadvantaged people in the country through offering a location, training and experiences.
